Mrs. Johnson

Mrs. Johnson doesn't seem to approve of the way Mama has spent the $10,000. Among other things she says:
"Ain't it something how bad these here white folks is getting here in Chicago! Lord, getting so you think you right down in Mississippi! 'Course I think it's wonderful how our folks keep on pushing out. You hear some of these Negroes round here talking 'bout how they don't go where they ain't wanted and all that--but not me, honey! Wilhemenia Othella Johnson goes anywhere, any time she feels like it! Yes I do! Why if we left it up to these here crackers, the poor niggers wouldn't have nothing--Oh, I always forgets you don't 'low that word in your house."

Why do you think Mrs. Johnson is so upset at the idea of the Youngers moving?

  2. I think she's upset because she and the Yougers are good neighbors and friends. She doesn't want them to move because it's dangerous in that new white neighborhood. She thinks they would get bombed.

  6. She doesn't want anything to happen to them like the bombings in chicago, but she also is mad because she thinks that the youngers think they are better than all the other colored people just because they're moving in to a white dominant neighborhood.

  7. It is probably since the Youngers are moving to a white neighborhood and that they will be the only black people on the block.

  9. I think she has a problem with the youngers moving because by moving to a mostly-white neighborhood, she thinks that they are going to be more full of themselves. Also, i think she is worried that something bad will happen to them, and they wont be as safe in the new neighborhood.

  14. Mrs. Johnson was upset about the Younger's moving because she's scared of what will happen to them once they do move. There was a black family that recently moved out because their house was bombed. I think Mrs. Johnson cared about the Younger's safety.

  16. I think that Mrs. Johnson is upset about the Younger's moving because she doesn't want them to get hurt, like the family that got bombed out of their house. She is worried that they will get kicked out of the neighborhood, and i think that she is only looking at what is best for the family.

  24. She doesn't want them to move because she is jealous. She wants them to stay in their poor living place with her and tries to make them stay by talking about bombs. She even hopes that they get bombed.
